Admissions Information
You are eligible for admission to UMGC as a regular student if you meet one of the following academic requirements:
- Graduation from a state-approved or regionally accredited high school.
- Passing scores on a state high school equivalency exam, such as the GED.
- Graduation from a homeschooling or alternative high school program in compliance with state and local education regulations in the state where you were homeschooled or attended an alternative high school.
- Graduation from a non-U.S. high school with a credential evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma by an approved international credential evaluation agency.
If you have not completed high school, you can meet UMGC regular admission requirements by completing an associate's degree from an accredited postsecondary institution or at least 60 credits from an accredited postsecondary institution with at least a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
Transcripts
You’ll need to submit an official high school transcript or documentation showing that you have the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma unless you are in one of the following student categories:
- You have not completed high school, but you earned at least 60 college-level credits or an associate’s degree.
- You have earned at least 30 college-level credits; these credits can include
- military credits or standard exams like DSST, AP, and CLEP.
Applicants for graduate certificate and master's degree programs do not need to have completed the GRE or GMAT. Along with your application, you only need to have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited degree-granting university or college. Degrees from other accredited institutions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Transcripts
For most programs, you can enroll in and begin earning your first 6 credits at UMGC as long as you submit an official transcript(s) demonstrating completion of a bachelor's degree by the last day of the first term of enrollment at UMGC. However, for some programs, we must receive and verify your official transcript(s) demonstrating completion of a bachelor's degree prior to admission.
Doctoral Degrees
Applicants to the Doctor of Business Administration and the Doctor of Management in Community College Policy and Administration have different requirements.
Some graduate programs require the submission of additional information before an admissions decision can be made.
You can earn international study transfer credit at UMGC by working with an independent approved agency.
In working with these independent agencies, you will need to complete these steps:
- Follow the specific instructions of the agency
- Include full payment as instructed by the agency
- Mail completed forms and payment directly to the agency—not to UMGC
- Request that the agency send the completed evaluation to UMGC at the following address:

Documentation of Secondary Education (High School Graduation)
If you have earned fewer than 30 credits at a U.S. college or university, you must verify your completion of the equivalent of a U.S. secondary education by doing one of the following:
- Request an evaluation from an approved international credit evaluation service.
- Provide official transcripts showing completion of the U.S. General Education Development, known as the GED, exam with a passing score.
Documentation of Baccalaureate Degree
If you were educated in a country other than the United States, you must have your official transcripts evaluated by an independent credit evaluation service. The evaluation company will send a copy of the evaluation to both you and UMGC.
English Language Proficiency
Unless educated in a designated English-speaking country, undergraduate and graduate students will need to demonstrate English language proficiency using one of many documentation options. See our Resources following the Survey for more guidance on these requirements.
